Caring for your hearing aid: Maintenance tips for long-lasting performance

Our audiologist will explain and demonstrate how to clean the various types of hearing aid when you purchase any product from us.

It is always essential to keep your hearing aid clean at all times. Heat, moisture, and foreign substances can result in poor performance.

  • Clean daily with a soft cloth and prevent damage from a fall to a hard surface.
  • Use a cleaning brush to clean debris from around the microphone, receiver, and battery compartment. Earwax and ear drainage can damage a hearing aid.
  • Never use water, cleaning fluids, or oil to clean your instrument.
  • When not in use, remove the batteries completely; place your hearing system in the storage container and store it in a dry, safe place
  • Away from direct sunlight or heat to avoid extreme temperature
  • Safely out of reach of pets and children.
  • Replace dead batteries immediately.

Professional cleaning once in 6 to 12 months is recommended as the patient may not have the right tools to clean the wax in between the tube or they may not be sure to remove the microphone cover and clean the dirt. Especially for individuals with CIC, RIC, and ITC hearing aids, their wax guard may be accumulated with wax and they may continue using the hearing aid without changing the wax guard which may damage the receiver part or decrease the sound quality and overall volume.

If you are unsure about cleaning the hearing aids, you should consult your audiologist (hearing specialist) rather than trying to fix it by yourself and damaging the aids even more.
